Yes, the ending may not please everyone and yes, it was predictable, but, hey, it's escapist reading and I loved it. When the service is over the girls find the in her will, Aunt Mary has left instruction that the two of them are to take her ashes and scatter them in a remote area of the Sahara desert. But to stay put, means certain death. Emily Kingsley and her cousin, Clemmie, are given the task of taking their Great Aunt Mary's ashes to Mali, to be scattered in a particular part of the dessert that's inhabited only by the nomadic tribes of the Tuareg. Emily doesn't even want to go to Africa but Clemmie's enthusiasm is catching. One thing that did make me happy, Great Aunt Mary wasn't depicted as a saintly, amazing, gorgeous old lady, with whom the cousins main characters had this epic relationship.
It felt like going on a great adventure. The adventure turns deadly in a heartbeat. Um uns wie gewohnt nichts. At the party is a new friend, Jane Wilde - there is a strong attraction between the two. So viel Landschaft erträgt man am Morgen nur mit ein paar Koka-Blättern, übrigens nicht aus österreichischem Anbau. The thought of what Clemmie does at the end leaves me highly stressed, but that's just me! I smiled from page one to the end and finished thinking the book was jolly good fun! The story opens at their Great Aunt Mary's funeral with Emily crying not only over the death of Aunt Mary but also over the demise of her relationship with her boyfriend. Why does Emily think her companion, Ms Timmis, knows something but is holding back from them? The plot was utterly predictable - every 'twist' could be seen a mile off. I thought to compare this to Nina Sovich's To the Moon and Timbuktu which I read last year since they take a similar route into the Sahara but this was so sugar coated it didn't seem the same country. However I stuck with it and the story came to its resolution in the end.
